Galaxy nails tutorial

Galaxy nails look complex, but they’re actually really simple to do. There are a few methods about it but they are equally easy. You’ll need a dark colour nail polish for the base colour and at least two other glittery or sparkly nail colours. You can work with more colours – it’s totally up to how colourful you want it. This galaxy nails tutorial will show you how.

Method 1: Painting layers

The first method just involves painting nail polish layers over one another to create a mix of colours and shimmer.

1) Paint your dark coloured nail polish as your base colour. Do two coats so that your nail is completely covered.

2) Layer the glittery colours over the nail. You can use the brushes straight out of the nail polish bottle to do this. Just dab or swipe parts of the nail at random. Keep the patterns on each nail varied to make it more interesting.

3) Repeat step 2 once or twice more to give your nails a multi-dimensional effect. But be sure that the layers below are dry before you paint over in case they smudge.

4) Finish off with a top coat. Viola!

Method 2: Dabbing with a sponge

The good thing about this method is that you’d get a more textured look and can control how you want the colours to blend more precisely.

You’ll need to get a basic make up sponge – those square/triangular ones (pictured above) meant for foundation. Cut them into a size you’re comfortable with if they’re too large.  Also, I’d recommend a clear glittery polish to seal in the look and add that extra layer of shine at the end.

1) Paint your dark coloured nail polish as your base colour. Do two coats so that your nail is completely covered.

2) Paint on some of the shimmery nail colour onto the corner of the sponge. Make sure there’s enough colour on it so you’d be able to transfer it, but not too much that it’s blobby or dripping.
3) Dab it onto your nail at random areas. Repeat this with other shimmery colours.
4) After you’re done dabbing and blending the colours, wait till the layers are dry and paint one layer of clear, shimmery polish over.
4) Finish off with your top coat and admire!
